Holliston moves forward with crosswalk safety upgrades after deadly crash

HOLLISTON, Mass. — Almost a year to the day a pedestrian was killed in Holliston there is renewed controversy about the town's crosswalks.

Last December, Karen Evers was killed while crossing Washington Street in the downtown area. After that crash, the town voted to install red lights at crosswalks in the area.

They are set to be installed in the summer of 2017, but a planned visit by a group that promotes municipal beautification projects during the construction caused some discussion.

“No matter what decision you make on it you have to put pedestrian safety number one,” Holliston resident Cory McGann said.

At a meeting Wednesday night, selectmen were asked about the potential delay.

“I don't know that there's been a change. We had a conversation about the possibility of doing that,” Selectman Jay Leary said. “We're going full steam ahead.”

And that’s a beautiful thing for residents who say right now, the crosswalks are basically on an honor system.

“One car stopped for us going one way but then the car going the other way just went right through and we had to stop in the middle of the street to let them go,” Holliston resident Emily Reilly said.
