Hingham police officers involved in non-fatal shooting

HINGHAM, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The Plymouth County District Attorney's office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place early Sunday morning.

Police received a call from a man who identified himself as Brian Middendorf, stating that he had a gun on Beal Street in Hingham at about 1:40 a.m. Sunday. The caller then hung up.

Police went to the 33-year-old's home at 14 Hillside Terrace. While officers were there, they saw a car pull into the driveway, then suddenly take off, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz.

Officers chased after the vehicle, which they say Middendorf was driving, until he stopped near Ward Street and Black Rock Drive. He opened the door and pointed what looked like a gun at police officers. One officer, whose name was not released, fired his gun, hitting Middendorf.

Paramedics took Middendorf to the hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds to the right thigh and arm. Police recovered the weapon in Middendorf's car, and determined it was a black pellet gun that resembled a semi-automatic handgun.

Middendorf is in critical condition, but is expected to survive. He has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, failure to stop for a police officer, and operating a motor vehicle to endanger.

An arraignment date had not yet been set.
