CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A Harvard University student was charged in connection with bomb threats made at the school Monday morning that caused the evacuation of four buildings and multiple final exams to be canceled.
Eldo Kim, a 20-year-old Harvard student, was named responsible for the hoax in a criminal complaint filed by the US Attorney's office on Tuesday.
According to the criminal complaint, an email bomb threat was sent at around 8:30 a.m. to multiple offices at Harvard, including the university's police department and the Harvard Crimson, the Ivy League school's student-run newspaper.
The email read, "shrapnel bombs placed in science center, sever hall, emerson hall, thayer hall, 2/4. guess correctly. be quick for they will go off soon."
A number of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies responded to the threats, evacuating the buildings for hours and sweeping the area for bombs. No explosive devices were found.
The affidavit filed stated that together, law enforcement agencies and Harvard were able to trace emails sent from an anonymous email service back to Eldo Kim's internet usage. When confronted, Kim admitted that he sent the emails, motivated by "a desire to avoid a final exam" happening on Monday morning.
Kim arrived to take his final in Emerson Hall at 9 a.m., but when he heard the fire alarm go off, "he knew that his plan had worked."
Kim said he used the word "shrapnel" in the email because it sounded more dangerous, according to the affidavit.
Under the bomb hoax law, Kim faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison, three years' supervised release and a $250,000 fine, according to the US Attorney's office. Kim will appear in US District Court on Wednesday.
