HANSON, Mass. – A family in Hanson is trying to piece their lives back together after a devastating fire destroyed their home and everything they owned.
Patrick Croghan told Boston 25 News he believes the cause was a load of dishes inside the family’s recently recalled Bosch dishwasher.
The fire was discovered by an off-duty firefighter who smelled burning plastic while driving by and stopped to investigate.
Croghan lived in the home with his wife and two adult children. On Wednesday, he took Boston 25 News inside to see the devastation.
“This is the dishwasher here. Everything around it, melted. The fire started on the side, I guess,” he said.

The family had lived in that home for 30 years.
“A lot of pictures, stuff like that. Anything that was in the house was destroyed, all of our furniture, bedding,” Croghan said.
The dishwasher had been recalled just days before the fire, and fire investigators told Croghan that was likely the cause.
On the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website, it says “BSH Home Appliances has received five reports of the power cords overheating and causing fires resulting in property damage. No injuries have been reported.”
As with the rest of the reported fires, Croghan is thankful no one was injured.
“I have a good relationship with the lord. I have a good family, and church family, good friends. I put everything in perspective,” he said.
Bosch sent Boston 25 News the following statement Wednesday night:
BSH has just been made aware of this incident. It is currently under investigation, therefore we are unable to comment.
Regarding a dishwasher recall, Bosch has issued a recall on certain dishwasher models. Consumers can determine if their dishwasher is affected by visiting www.bosch-home.com/us or calling 888-965-5813 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST Monday through Sunday.
The Hanson Fire Department reached out to Boston 25 News and said they were continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
