Gun stolen from Georgia recovered in Boston, says police

BOSTON — An officer was injured during a struggle to recover a loaded gun that had been stolen from Newnan, Georgia, said Boston police.

Boston police officers said they pulled over a car with an expired registration Monday near 503 Washington St. in Dorchester.

While speaking to the driver, an officer learned that 41-year-old Tyrone Hicks of Dorchester had rented the car from Hertz. However, his driver's license was also allegedly expired.

The officer ordered Hicks and his passenger from the car so it could be towed. Hicks was arrested without incident, but his passenger,  26-year-old Darnell R. Pierre of Dorchester, began moving his hands toward something in his waistband.

An officer tried to frisk Pierre and felt a hard metal object in his waistband, said police. Pierre then allegedly shoved the officer's hand away and reached for the object.

Police said a "violent struggle ensued," and at one point the officer held onto a firearm barrel as Pierre tried to pull it out.

Officers were eventually able to subdue Pierre and place him in handcuffs, but one officer suffered non-life threatening injuries, said Boston police.

Police allegedly recovered a Taurus Millennium G2 .40 caliber handgun from inside Pierre’s pants, which they later learned had been reported stolen out of Newnan, Geogria on June 16, 2017.

Pierre was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, receiving stolen property, and resisting arrest. Hicks was arrested and charged with use of a motor vehicle without authority, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operating an uninsured and unregistered motor vehicle.
