Gun debate renewed after Conn. school massacre

(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – A mass killing of elementary school students certainly could be the tipping point for the debate on gun control with the focus turning to semi-automatic weapons and high capacity magazines that allow more rapid firing.
    
All of the victims in the Connecticut school massacre were shot numerous times, according to the medical examiner, before the gunman killed himself.

According to FOX News, multiple 30-round magazines and hundreds of bullets were found at the scene, along with three guns, next to Adam Lanza's body in one of the classrooms.
    
A semi-automatic .223 caliber bushmaster rifle and two handguns – that type of rifle is commonly used for sport and seen at shooting competitions. It was the kind used in the 2002 sniper killings in the DC area, according to FOX News.
    
The guns were reportedly owned by Lanza's mother. The Huffington Post reports those who knew Nancy Lanza, say guns were her hobby. Investigators say Adam Lanza killed her with one of her own guns before shooting his way Sandy Hook Elementary.

At a vigil in Newtown Sunday night, President Barack Obama said this is the fourth time in he has traveled to a city to mourn a mass shooting and this cannot be tolerated anymore.     
    
President Obama said as a nation we've endured far too much violence like this, from the recent shopping mall shooting in Oregon, to the movie theater massacre in Colorado over the summer and the Sikh temple attack in Wisconsin before that.

Some say this could open up the first real political debate since Congress passed the Brady Bill for handgun background checks, and for a time, banned many assault rifles in the 90s.
    
Fifteen of the world's 25 worst mass killings over the last half century have taken place in the United States.
