Group launches 'Hail Mary' to save Worcester Church

WORCESTER, Mass. — Worcester's city council is backing a last-ditch effort to save a historic church in the city.

But time on the years long effort to save the church is running out as demolition is imminent.

The people behind the effort to save the church built in 1929 went to the city council Tuesday night, hoping for a 'Hail Mary' to save the landmark church.

The group asked the city council to support a plan that would save and re-purpose the building.

The Save Notre Dame Alliance has posted a petition to their Facebook page. It is asking for pledges with the hope of raising $100,000 in support by the end of April.

Supporters say they need 1,000 people to make a pledge, and they hope the offer is accepted.

The city council voted Tuesday night to give the city manager the authority to speak with the developer again to try and see if there's a last minute opportunity to save the church.
