Great white sharks return off coast of Chatham

CHATHAM (AP) – Great white sharks have returned off the coast of Cape Cod. And with temperatures back in the 90s today, beachgoers should keep their eyes peeled.

State fisheries officials say two great white sharks tagged last summer off the Cape Cod coast have been detected via transmitter signals picked up earlier this month off Chatham.

Great white sharks have been spotted off Chatham often in recent years and last summer shark sightings closed several beaches. They are drawn to the area by an abundance of seals, which sharks feed on.

State shark expert Greg Skomal says the tags can provide data on when the sharks leave the Cape and their movement over long distances.
