Good Samaritan helps rescue 5 from burning boat off Cape Cod

WOODS HOLE, Mass. — Five people were rescued from a burning boat off Cape Cod Sunday thanks to a good Samaritan and the United States Coast Guard.

USCG officials said the boat caught fire about 18 miles south of Nomans Land.

The unidentified good Samaritan radioed watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern around 10 a.m. after seeing the 32-foot boat in flames and rescuing the five people on board.

A rescue boat raced to the scene and when it arrived the crew reported that everyone was safe and the burning boat had capsized.

The five boaters were transferred to the rescue boat and were taken to Woods Hole where family was waiting to bring them home, the Coast Guard said.

A commercial salvage company recovered the capsized vessel.

It’s unknown how the boat caught fire.
