• Globe endorses Tisei in Congressional race

BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - In the race for the 6th Congressional District seat, it wasn't incumbent Democrat John Tierney, but Republican Richard Tisei who won the endorsement of The Boston Globe on Tuesday.

The Globe called Tisei's mix of Libertarianism and fiscal Conservatism an excellent blueprint for New England Republicans. They added that the troubled ties Tierney's family had to an illegal gambling ring and his evasiveness in handling the matter factored into their endorsement.

Tisei was surprised by the endorsement, even though the newspaper had endorsed the Republican twice before.

"I did not expect it, but The Globe has been pretty fair, and they have been watching this race pretty closely," Tisei said. "They have followed my career, followed my time in the State House, watched me when I was the minority leader in the state Senate, and I think they understand I will bring an independent viewpoint."

On Oct. 4, Republican Richard Tisei and Independent Daniel Fishman made their case to voters during a live debate on the FOX 25 news at 6 p.m.

Congressman Tierney refused a debate invitation in FOX 25 studios on several occasions; however, FOX 25 left a seat open for the Congressman leading up to and during the debate.

Tierney told FOX 25 that he did not believe that his campaign was in trouble, despite a report he didn't have enough cash to run local television ads during the last two weeks.

The Tierney campaign did not comment on The Globe's endorsement.

Polls currently show Tisei in the lead.
