Glen Doherty inducted into National Wrestling Hall of Fame

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Former Navy SEAL Glen Doherty was inducted into the Mass. chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Saturday.

Doherty, a wrestler for Winchester High School, was killed in the American embassy attack in Benghazi, Libya on Sept. 11, 2012.

He is credited with saving 20 people in the attack. The number 20 was put on Winchester High School's "Wall of Honor," in tribute to him.

"Wrestling was a foundation of my brother's toughness and Larry Trembly coaching him helped transition him into manhood," said Doherty's brother, Greg.

Doherty was also awarded the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's Medal of Courage.

Greg Doherty said he was impressed that so many of his teammates turned out to honor Glen's memory.

"To me it means that it matters that there are people who are willing to give their lives to save people," said Doherty. "It's about what's important as humans."

Trembly said Glen was an all-around guy who excelled at everything. He tells FOX 25's John Monahan that a plaque will be displayed at the National Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla.

"He made the ultimate sacrifice and as a coach it's tough," said Trembly.

A portrait of Doherty was also unveiled. It will hang in the wrestling room at Winchester High. The Doherty family was also given a New England Patriots helmet signed by the entire team.
