Girl hit crossing for bus on Cape

CENTERVILLE (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – A Barnstable High School student was hit while crossing the street to get on a school bus Thursday morning in Centerville.

Barnstable police say the unidentified 16-year-old girl was hit at Old Stage Road and Patriots Way. Police said a Centerville man driving a car on the other side of the road hit the girl. The man has been identified as 81-year-old John Mullaly.

Mullaly was cited for Operating to endanger and failure to stop for a school bus. A request to the Registry of Motor Vehicles for immediate threat will also be filed to determine if he is competent to maintain his drivers' license.

According to witnesses, the school bus was completely stopped in the southbound lane with overhead lights flashing. As the girl began to cross the street, just slightly ahead of her brother, police said she was hit by Mullaly's car, which was traveling in the northbound lane. She was struck by the front center of the car and thrown up and over the hood, tumbling to the street.

The girl was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital for a possible broken leg and other cuts and bruises. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The incident remains under investigation.
