Gas prices inching higher ahead of summer travel season

NORWOOD, Mass. — Gas prices are starting to rise and all eyes are on whether it will hit the three dollar mark by summer.

Across the Commonwealth, gas prices are up about 17 cents in the past month.

As people hit the road in the summer months, it’s not unusual for prices to spike as refineries switch over to the summer blend. But with tensions in the Middle East and a growing demand for fuel, prices having been inching upward.

According to GasBuddy.com -- an online site that tracks prices across the country -- Boston has had prices below the national average.

Location March 31 April 13 April 25
Boston $2.63 $2.65 $2.76
Natl. Avg. $2.65 $2.70 $2.76
New York $2.75 $2.77 $2.89

In late March, a gallon was about $2.63. Compare that to the rest of the country, which was paying about $2.65. Our neighbors to the south in New York City were paying $2.75.

But in just a month, gas has been on the increase with the average gallon now $2.76.

The silver lining is drivers on the west coast are paying about $3.60 a gallon.
