Fugitive Mass. rapist appears in court

DEDHAM, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts judge has agreed to release the criminal file of a man who eluded justice for decades after being convicted of raping three women.

Gary Alan Irving, who was captured last month in Maine, appeared briefly in Norfolk Superior Court with his lawyer on Friday.

The judge ruled that Irving's file could be publicly released after both prosecutors and news media seeking the release agreed that names of victims and jurors would be blacked out.

Irving, now 52, faced a possible life sentence after being convicted in 1979 of three counts of rape and kidnapping. He went on the run after a judge allowed him to return home to make final arrangements before sentencing.

Irving was arrested in Gorham, Maine, where he had been living for years.
