Four-alarm fire damages one of state's few slaughterhouses

GROTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A four-alarm blaze ravaged one of just two slaughterhouses in Massachusetts Sunday afternoon.

The fire happened at 943 West Main St., the location of Blood Farm slaughterhouse, which Groton Fire Chief Joseph Bosselait said has been family-owned for five generations.

Passersby called in the fire just after 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Firefighters from Ayer, Townsend, Lunenburg and Pepperell also responded to the fire.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and is being investigated, but officials believe it may have started in the building's smoke room.
