Former Patriots head coach dies after battle with brain cancer

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Former Patriots head coach Chuck Fairbanks has died at the age of 79.

The Patriots official Twitter account announced Fairbanks' passing on Tuesday afternoon. He died in Scottsdale, Ariz. on Tuesday after being diagnosed in August 2012 with inoperable brain cancer, reports newsok.com.

Fairbanks served as head coach at the University of Oklahoma before being hired as head coach of the Patriots in 1973. The Patriots had a 46-39 record under Fairbanks, who left in 1978 to become head coach at Colorado. He later coached in the United States Football League before pursuing a career in real estate and golf-course development.

Fairbanks is survived by his wife and five children.
