NEWBURYPORT, Mass. — A former city councilor and school committee member in a Massachusetts community is being held without bail on child rape and child pornography charges.
Newburyport police say 42-year-old Bert Reed was arrested Friday on three counts of rape of a child, enticement of a child under 16, disseminating obscene matter to a minor and possession of child pornography.
Newburyport's mayor, Donna Holaday, told Boston 25 News that Reed was elected to City Council from 1997-2001 and to the School Committee from 2001-2003. Holaday said since that time he has had no official connection with the city or served on any board or commission.
Officials say they started investigating Reed after getting a complaint from the alleged victim's parents.
Reed was held over the weekend on $50,000 bail and it could not immediately be determined if he has a lawyer.
A dangerousness hearing is scheduled for May 4.
