Former Medway HS soccer players run half marathon to help teammate with cancer

MEDWAY, Mass. — A group of former Medway high school soccer players is coming together to honor and help out a former teammate with cancer.

Members from both the boys and girls soccer teams were training out in the cold on Sunday as they prepare to run either a half-marathon or a 5K at the Providence Marathon in May.

They say they're running in honor of their former teammate and friend, Ian Mackechnie, who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that affects the soft tissue of the body.

Mackechnie lives in Maine and has to travel to New York for treatment every three weeks.

The team says Ian's battle hits home to all of them.

Just last year, they lost another former teammate to cancer.

They're also hoping to raise funds to help out their friend.

The runners have a fundraising goal of $15,000, all of which will go towards Ian's treatments.
