Fore River project reaches milestone with new lift span

QUINCY, Mass. — A major milestone will be reached in the Fore River Bridge project in Massachusetts when its new lift span will be floated on a barge through the marine channel and installed on the bridge superstructure.

The installation process scheduled for Monday will require the use of three tug boats and close coordination by the contractor, the U.S. Coast Guard and other marine officials.

On Friday, crews at the Quincy Shipyard were busy jacking up the new lift span, which weighs almost three million pounds and is longer than a football field.

Once completed, the bridge will serve as a multi-modal transportation connection between Quincy and Weymouth and travelers to and from Boston.

Drivers will be permitted to travel across the temporary Fore River Bridge during the float and installation.
