Flights to Puerto Rico resume at Logan Tuesday morning

BOSTON — As people living Puerto Rico try and recover from a devastating hurricane last week, those anxious to get back to the island are finally able to do so as flights from Logan resumed to the island Tuesday morning.

JetBlue flight 8081 departed Logan for San Juan at 8:30 a.m.

That comes after the first flight from San Juan to Boston landed carrying nearly 200 passengers.

With no power at San Juan’s airport and radar systems damaged, it will be weeks before flight schedules resume to normal.

One passenger, who wanted to be identified as Greshen, left her Worcester home to bring her aun to the airport. She had been visiting for the past month and booked a flight to get back to her daughter.

"She talked to her daughter like two days ago," Greshen said. "She lost her house and everything. My aunt lost her roof. Her house flooded. She's going backl to try and fix her apartment."

Rachel Sawyer was waiting Monday night for the flight to land. Three of her four children were on the island caring for a relative when Hurricane Maria hit.

“We live in Puerto Rico. We came stateside to take my son to Raleigh for a few days, and then the hurricane hit,” Sawyer said. “It came right through our back yard. They made it by the grace of God. They made it, and I’m just so happy to see them.”

There are only a limited number of planes getting in and out of Puerto Rico.
