Firefighter hospitalized while fighting Ayer blaze expected to be OK

AYER, Mass. – Firefighters had to rescue one of their own from the roof of a burning building Wednesday afternoon in Ayer.

The Ayer Fire Department says firefighters were putting out a large fire when he needed medical assistance.

Boston 25 News has learned the family was doing construction inside this home at the time, which made the fire even worse.

Fire officials said good Samaritan Corey Brock was in the right place at the right time to help get the family and their two dogs out safely.

“I could tell there was a fire going on, there was a lot of smoke coming out of the ridge line and we had to make the call,” he told Boston 25 News.

The flames spread fast, and even though the fire department was quick to respond, it was too late to save the barn.

“Within five minutes the sky was pitch black, within two minutes the tree behind the house was engulfed in flames,” a neighbor said.

Fire Captain Paul Fillebrown says no one lives inside the barn which is also an attached garage to the house, and thankfully the family got out safely.

“We train for this, it’s rapid intervention, we have crew ready for him and they went up and did what they were supposed to. Firefighters rescuing firefighters, they did a great job today,” he said.

The rescued firefighter was taken to Nashoba Valley Medical Center and is expected to be okay.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. It’s unclear when the family will be able to return home.
