Fire destroys historic Nantucket building

NANTUCKET, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A historic Nantucket building currently undergoing renovation was destroyed in a fire on Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to 56 Centre Street around 2:10 p.m. and spent over an hour battling the fire. When crews arrived at the scene, the building was consumed by flames and heavy smoke was pouring out of the windows on the second floor, reports The Nantucket Inquirer and Mirror.

The building was being converted into the home of the Nantucket Community Music Center and a downtown educational space for the Community School, reports the newspaper.

No injuries were reported.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
