Fire destroys car, backs up Pike near Worcester

WORCESTER, Mass. — Fire completely destroyed a car on the Pike Sunday afternoon and backed up Thanksgiving travel traffic.

The fire happened near Brigham Hill Road on the westbound side of the Pike, before the Millbury exit.

Firefighters were on scene working to put out the fire, with just a shell of a car left.

MassDOT said that two westbound lanes were closed due to the fire. One lane has since reopened, but the right lane is still closed. Due to the spectacle, eastbound lanes also backed up, though no lanes were closed.

The driver, a 56-year-old Worcester man, was not injured.
