Fire at historic Union Oyster House under investigation

BOSTON — The cause of a fire at the Union Oyster House in Boston remains under investigation Friday morning.

Diners at the famous restaurant noticed the flames near lights on the outside of the building around 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

The building was evacuated as crews worked to carefully douse the flames.

The fire caused about $2,000 in damages to the outside of the building, but no injuries were reported.

Fire crews told the Boston Globe that they were working hard to not break any windows.

The Union Oyster House has been open since 1826. It’s the oldest restaurant in Boston and the oldest restaurant with continuous service in the country.

An electrical inspector is being called in to take a look at the building.

It’s unclear how long the restaurant will be closed because of the fire.
