Feds drop old charge against mobster's girlfriend

BOSTON (AP) - Federal prosecutors have dismissed an earlier indictment against the longtime girlfriend of mobster James "Whitey" Bulger, now that she has been sentenced to eight years in prison for helping Bulger evade capture for 16 years.

Bulger and Greig were apprehended in Santa Monica, Calif., last June.

Greig was originally charged with conspiracy to harbor a fugitive. A later information included that charge, as well as additional charges of identity fraud and conspiracy to commit identity fraud.

Greig pleaded guilty in March to all three charges. Under the terms of her plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to drop the earlier indictment after she was sentenced on the three charges.

U.S. District Judge Douglas Woodlock sentenced Greig on Tuesday. Prosecutors dismissed the charge Wednesday.

The move is procedural and has no effect on her sentence.
