Family raises money for lighted crosswalk after 62-year-old's death

WEYMOUTH, Mass. — After a 62-year-old Rockland woman was hit and killed on a dark road just before Christmas, her loved ones have rallied to raise money to create a lighted crosswalk.

More than 200 people came out to the Weymouth Elks Club Saturday night to celebrate Ellen Partridge and raise funds for the crosswalk on North Street in Rockland.

"It will be really wonderful to do that in her name so it won't be for nothing

Ellen was a cashier at Stop & Shop and she touched many lives in her 18 years there. The company, along with individuals from the Rockland community, donated items for a silent auction, food, and entertainment—so that no other family may lose a loved one as people from Rockland lost Ellen.

It’s funny, I still miss my sister, so it’s sad, but it’s wonderful seeing how many nice people are here

After Saturday night’s benefit, the fundraiser will have met its goal of $10,000.

Organizers say town officials were so moved by this effort they have pledged to install five more lighted crosswalks around Rockland.
