Family pleads for answers two months after jet ski death

LOWELL, Mass. — No arrests have been made two months after a husband and father of four was killed while jet skiing.

Juan Arroyo-Ortiz was killed just three days before his, and his wife’s, birthday. Police say Arroyo-Ortiz and another jet skier collided on the Merrimack River in Lowell. The other driver did not stop.

One month later, a 16-year-old girl was killed after a drunken boater hit her while she was jet skiing.

Now, city officials are considering banning jet skiing on portions of the Merrimack River, but Arroyo-Ortiz’s family says that ban would punish the wrong people.

Miguel Fernandez is Arroyo-Ortiz’s brother-in-law and says his family’s pain increases every day they don’t receive an update.

“Just put yourself in our position, our shoes, our pain. This isn't a pain that will just go away without us knowing what really happened out there,” said Fernandez.

The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office told Boston 25 News they do not have an update at this time.
