Family of hometown Olympian celebrates late-night gold medal

DANVERS, Mass. -- Fans of Team USA were treated to an unforgettable championship game in Women’s hockey that lasted well into Thursday morning, but the payoff was worth it.

It was 2:30 a.m. in Danvers when the Duggan family got something they’ve long been waiting for – gold.

“We were so happy and so excited,” Marlene Duggan said.

Marlene and Ed didn’t hold back though. Seeing their granddaughter win was something they’d long been waiting for, and when it came in a shootout they did not hold back.

“I was afraid to holler and scream because we lived in our own home for 60 years but we're in an apartment now we were afraid to yell out too loud,” Marlene said.

Meghan Duggan is the team captain. She’s been playing hockey her whole life, but in the past two winter Olympics her and the other players on Team USA went home with silver.

“I'm just so happy if this is her swan song she certainly went out at the top of,” Ed told Boston 25 News.

They day was so special for the family, and the late finish made Feb. 22 even more special.

“It was like the greatest 90th birthday present you could imagine,” Ed said.

In life’s golden years, the proud grandparents can’t wait to celebrate with Meghan in person.

“I can't wait to have them all come home and hug, kiss and congratulate them and have them back, have them back here,” Marlene said.
