FALL RIVER (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) The city of Fall River hosted several events on Saturday in honor of their annual Christmas tree lighting.

This year's events come just days after Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee gave only 30 minutes notice prior to lighting the state's "holiday tree" during the day.

The Rhode Island governor said he wanted to avoid what happened in 2011, when protesters who opposed calling the state's tree a "holiday" tree crashed the event.

Fall River Mayor William A. Flanagan quickly invited Rhode Island residents to attend his Christmas tree lighting on Saturday.
