Evacuations ordered after partial building collapse in Southie

BOSTON — Evacuations have been ordered after a building partially collapsed in South Boston Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to 56-62 O Street after a second floor resident reported hearing a snapping sound and saw that a wall had buckled.

The damage extends from the front to the back of the home, and about 11 people from the affected building as well as surrounding ones were evacuated.

But, fire officials said, the situation could have been a lot worse.

“We’re just worried about life safety for the most part," Boston fire Deputy Chief Robert Calibrisi said. "To get to people that are affected if they became trapped or were in danger in any way. Thank God there wasn’t that danger here. Nobody was compromised. Everyone was evacuated from the building properly and safely."

MBTA buses were brought in to keep residents warm overnight, but most were able to stay with people in the area.

Part of the street has been closed while a building inspector checks the structural integrity of the structure.

No injuries have been reported.

No other information was immediately available.
