Early morning fire in Lowell displaces 25

LOWELL (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) A Lowell official is calling a two-alarm fire that displaced 25 people "suspicious."

The two-alarm blaze broke out shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday morning at a multi-family complex near the intersection if Bridge and Second streets.

The Lowell Sun reports Fire Deputy Michael Donnelly says the blaze appeared to have begun in an outdoor trash receptacle and then spread to mattresses that were leaning against the building.

Donnelly said that trash receptacles "just don't catch fire by themselves" and that the fire does appear suspicious at this time.

The American Red Cross is assisting the 25 people displaced by the fire.
