Durfee High coach facing child rape charges

FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) - An assistant basketball and football coach at Fall River's B.M.C. Durfee High School has been charged with raping a preteen girl over a two-year period.

James F. Lee III was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail after pleading not guilty at his arraignment Monday on two counts of rape of a child with force and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14.

The 34-year-old Lee was arrested two weeks ago in Maryland, where prosecutors say he fled after the alleged victim's mother confronted him.

The Herald News reports the allegations came to light last month when the now 13-year-old girl told a friend, who told adults.

Lee's attorney, Joseph Keegan, says the girl's accounts are inconsistent and there is no physical evidence in the case.
