Dryer to blame in 2-alarm fire at Newton home

NEWTON, Mass. — A dryer is to blame for the fire that brought a huge response to a Langley Road home in Newton on Wednesday afternoon.

Residents were hastily cleared from the home, and thankfully no one sustained any injuries.

"I heard some pounding on my door and I heard the woman across the room scream 'fire! fire!'" said one resident.

The fire, which happened inside a dryer, cleared out all nine units in the building.

"I opened my door, I could hear the fire alarm going off in the building and there was thick, black as night, acrid smoke," said a resident.

The flames didn't spread to the rest of the four-story building, but it was bad enough that the couple on the second floor unit, where the fire broke out, had to be rescued by crews.

The couple retreated out to their balcony when they first noticed the fire, where firefighters then escorted them down the stairs as they evacuated the rest of the building.

"I was in a hurry and the police were really hustling me out," said a resident.

Neighbors who witnessed the chaos are now clearing their own dryers after the scare, just to be safe.

"You don't think about ti and then something like this happens," said one resident.

Fire investigators said the damage is estimated to be at around $50,000, but say they were lucky the fire didn't spread to the rest of the building.
