Drivers confused over new traffic signal in Quincy

quincy — Drivers in Quincy are confused about a new traffic signal and pedestrians are afraid someone might get hurt.

The new lights are at two intersections in Quincy on Hancock Street and the city says they are designed to ease traffic. But so far, FOX25 found that a lot of people are still learning how they work.

The new signals include two flashing red lights and a yellow flashing light, with no green light. When there's no flashing light at all, that's when it's safe to drive. When it's flashing yellow, that means slow down and solid yellow means prepare to stop. Similar to regular stop lights, double red means stop. Flashing red works like a stop sign  first stop, and then continue if clear.

"I see people actually blow through it too.  I mean it's still red, no matter what," said Kate Holowchik.

For people trying to cross the street, it's just as confusing.

"I noticed actually that when they were counting down for the crosswalks, people started to drive.  So that might be a concern," said Sharon Sacilotto.

The new signal was put in to help ease traffic as the city puts in a new park. Leaders told FOX25 that drivers are getting used to the new pattern and they put up bright signs that explain how it works.

The Quincy police have also a video on their Twitter, showing drivers how the system works.

So far, despite the confusion, police said the intersection is crash free.
