UXBRIDGE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The driver of an SUV involved in a violent head-on collision following a police chase died and another driver was seriously injured on Friday afternoon.
The crash at 122 South Main Street. Police said the pursuit began on Route 122 in Northbridge when an officer began following the green SUV and attempted to pull it over.
"The car was in the middle going between everything weaving in and out," said Sharon Kach, who pulled over to let the pursuit pass. "(Police) were following right behind him."
Police said they had backed off the pursuit just before the crash. Officers said the suspect was driving the vehicle at about 35- to 40-mph when it crossed the center line and collided with a silver pickup truck.
SkyFox video showed rescue crews performing chest compressions on the driver of the SUV after they had removed him from the vehicle. He was flown by medical helicopter to UMass Medical Center in Worcester where he was pronounced dead. He was not identified.
Crews had to cut the roof off of the silver pickup truck to access the driver. He was identified as 30-year-old Anthony Southwick, of Uxbridge. The Worcester County DA's office said Southwick was also taken to UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester with serious injuries.
An officer said the SUV was reported stolen out of Rhode Island but the owner of the vehicle was not identified.
An investigation into the incident, including how police handled the chase, is ongoing.
