Driver in Berkshires car surfing stunt avoids jail

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A Great Barrington man who was driving when his drunken friend almost died in a car surfing stunt has avoided jail.

Aaron Trombley received a one-year suspended jail term Tuesday for the August 2012 stunt that left John Brazee of Sheffield with severe head injuries.

A police report said that doctors at the time weren't sure Brazee would survive.

Police say the men had been drinking when Trombley allowed Brazee to ride on the roof of his vehicle while driving about 25 miles per hour. Brazee fell and suffered three skull fractures and other injuries.

reports that Trombley wasn't supposed to be driving because his license had been revoked as a habitual traffic offender.

Trombley's lawyer says his client has stopped drinking.
