• Driver hit by train to be cited for going around the crossing gate

MEDFORD (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) Police say they plan to cite a 69-year-old New Hampshire man after he reportedly maneuvered his car around a crossing gate in West Medford Thursday morning. The man's car was hit by the AMTRAK Downeaster as a result.

The plans to cite the unidentified driver come after witnesses at the scene told police that the lights were flashing and the gate was down. They claim the car stopped or appeared to stop before jumping the gate.

The incident happened at the High Street crossing at around 8 a.m. Officials said the car sustained "substantial damage."

Officials say the train was travelling between 35 and 40 mph and that the accident could have been much worse if it occurred in a more remote area where the train can travel at a faster rate.

The driver of the car was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with minor injuries.
