ORANGE, Mass. — Chessie, the 11-month-old Chesapeake Bay retriever, was hit by a drunk driver in front of his Massachusetts home on Dec. 13. Officers with the Orange Police Department saw it happen.
They were able to arrest the driver, who was later charged with a second offense.
Chessie went into the woods, and after extensive searches, he was presumed to be dead.
But 43 days later, someone spotted Chessie a mile from his home. He was able to survive 43 days and nights in the cold, even with the snow and frigid temperatures we've seen.
Chessie has a badly injured hip and faces months of rehab to get back to normal. But he is finally home in his own bed.
Chessie's owners face mounting medical bills for the dog, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to help with expenses.
