Dog rescued after being thrown from car in Everett

EVERETT, Mass. – A 1-year-old Chihuahua mix is recovering after it was tossed out of a vehicle and into traffic in Everett.

Chris Desrochers said he was on his way home from work around 11 p.m. Tuesday when among all the cars on Route 16 he saw something unusual in traffic.

“I ended up pulling over seeing a girl I knew in the middle of the road,” he said.

That girl, Desrochers’ friend Jamie, was tending to the dog, which had been left for dead after being discarded like a piece if trash.

“I did everything I could to protect that dog. The father instincts of me took over,” Desrochers said.

Police say the dog hit the pavement hard, and likely wouldn’t have survived had it not been for the girl who stopped and Desrochers.

“A monster does something like that. But if you do something like that in my city, we're going to find you,” Everett Police Animal Control Officer Stacia Gorgone said.

By the time Gorgone arrived, the dog had been moved out of the street. She immediately loaded him into her vehicle and began the trek to Mass. Veterinary Hospital in Woburn.

“I petted him the whole way there. I said ‘Ii got you. We're going to the hospital. You’re going to make it,’” she said.

The young dog is facing an amputation of his back leg, but he’s stable and alive thanks to the strangers who rescued him.

“For someone to throw a living thing out the window is pretty bad,” Desrochers said. “I Just knew inside of me that if I left that dog, and me and Jamie went home, that dog wouldn't have a fighting chance.”

Investigators believe the dog was intentionally thrown from a black Cadillac SUV. They’re continuing to search for that vehicle and driver as the dog recovers.
