DOC officer accused of stealing $8K from vending machines

DEDHAM (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) A Department of Correction employee is accused of using prior work experience to steal thousands of dollars from vending machines.

Donald Packard, 36, of Brockton, is facing charges that include seven counts of breaking and entering into a depository of money and larceny over $250 amid allegations that he stole over $8,000 from vending machines in Norwood, Westwood, and Dedham.

Packard worked for a vending machine company prior to being hired as a corrections officer at the Bay State Correctional Center in 2010. Investigators believe that Packard gained access to vending machines previously owned by the company with a key he kept after switching jobs. The alleged thefts occurred between Sept. 2011 and July 2012.

The 36-year-old was arrested in July and arraigned in Dedham District Court. Packard was indicted on Friday by a Norfolk County Grand Jury. He will be arraigned in Norfolk Superior Court on Oct. 19.
