Disabled veterans waiting for state checks

The state's Department of Veterans' Services is blaming a "computer glitch" for the delay in paying benefits to thousands of disabled veterans and their families.

The annuity check are issued twice a year, on February 1st and August 1st.

They're given to veterans who are 100-percent disabled and their widows as well as family members whose loved ones died in war.

The state's Department of Veterans' Services was supposed to make sure those $1,000 checks were delivered by Wednesday, but many people still haven't received them.

Veterans' Services Secretary Coleman Nee says a record number of checks were processed, more than 10,000 in all, and the computer program couldn't handle it.

"The problem for this batch that didn't go out was identified on Monday, July 31st," said Nee. "We then took that batch, reprocessed them, fixed the glitch in the software and all through the system."

"Did someone drop the ball here in this office?" asked FOX Undercover's Mike Beaudet.

"I think we ultimately have to take responsibility for it," replied Nee.

If you haven't received your money yet, Nee says the check should arrive in the mail or be deposited into your bank account by Friday.
