Democratic Rep. Lynch to decide soon on Senate run

BOSTON (AP) - Congressman Stephen Lynch is planning to decide soon whether to jump into a special Senate election to fill Sen. John Kerry's seat if Kerry is confirmed as secretary of state.

The Boston Democrat told WCVB-TV that if he gets into the race he expects to be outspent and would push for a so-called "people's pledge" to discourage advertising by outside groups.

Lynch was referring to an agreement between former Sen. Scott Brown and then-Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren in last year's Senate race that successfully kept outside political groups from launching television, radio or Internet ads.

So far, Congressman Ed Markey is the only announced Democratic candidate.

Other possible Democratic candidates include U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano and state Rep. Ben Downing.

Brown is weighing a run on the Republican side.
