Deliberations continue in ex-Mass. treasurer trial

BOSTON (AP) - The jury in the corruption trial of former Massachusetts Treasurer Tim Cahill has gone home for the day without reaching a verdict.

The Suffolk Superior Court jury began deliberating Tuesday afternoon and continued all day Wednesday before leaving the courthouse at about 4 p.m. Deliberations are expected to resume Thursday morning.

Cahill is charged with violating state ethics laws by orchestrating a scheme to air $1.5 million in taxpayer-funded lottery ads in an attempt to promote his faltering 2010 independent gubernatorial campaign.

Cahill testified that he ran the ads to defend the lottery against Republican ads that attacked him and his management of the lottery.

Both Cahill and his former campaign manager, Scott Campbell, face up to five years in prison if convicted.
