Deadly apartment fire at Westfield eldery complex

WESTFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Authorities in Westfield say one person has died after a fire at an apartment complex for the elderly.

Fire Chief Mary Regan tells the Springfield Republican, the Monday afternoon fire was contained to one apartment but other units had smoke and water damage, displacing 10 residents.

The cause of the fire, which police was reported about 1:30 p.m., is being investigated. No other details were immediately released.

Residents were evacuated to the nearby Westfield Senior Center. The Red Cross is assisting those who aren't able to return to their apartments.
