QUINCY, Mass. (AP)- The Norfolk district attorney says a state trooper was justified in shooting a driver whose family said he was mentally ill.
District Attorney Michael Morrissey said Thursday 41-year-old Wilfredo Justiniano Jr. of New Bedford advanced on the trooper with a pen, screaming that he would kill the officer.
The Patriot Ledger of Quincy reports Demaris Justiniano said her brother struggled with mental illness. She said he was driving to Boston to visit their father when he was killed June 14 in Quincy.
Morrissey said the trooper approached Justiniano after reports he was behaving erratically and might be having a medical emergency on Route 28. He said the trooper couldn't calm or subdue Justiniano, even with pepper spray. He said the officer shot Justiniano when he kept advancing at him with the pen.
