EAST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (AP) — Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe says he is trying to piece together the events leading up to the fatal shooting of a suspected store robber by police in East Bridgewater.
Authorities say 46-year-old Jeffrey Watts used a shotgun to rob a Brockton pharmacy of prescription painkillers on Monday, then led police on a chase from Brockton into Whitman and East Bridgewater where he was killed in an exchange of gunfire with Brockton and state police.
O'Keefe says a "significant number" of shots were fired along the route. Witnesses said they heard up to 30.
O'Keefe is handling the investigation at the request of Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz who wanted to avoid the appearance of bias because one of the state troopers involved is assigned to his office.
