Bourne apartment building goes up in flames overnight

BOURNE, Mass. — Firefighters responded to a large apartment building fire early Monday morning that forced several people out into the street.

The Bourne fire department and several other departments fought the flames at the Canalview Apartments on Sandwich Road. The fire broke out around 1 a.m.

It appears the flames were coming from the roof of the complex. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to one building. At some points, crews dealt with wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour while trying to get the fire under control.

Most people were sleeping when the flames broke out, but everyone was able to get out safely.

One father told FOX25's Stephanie Coueignoux about the frightening call he received from his daughter, who lives in the complex. James Conroy said his daughter, who is blind, called him in the middle of the night to tell him about the fire.

"She was getting upset," Conroy said. "She was saying, 'I'm fine. There are people taking care of me. I'm all right.'"

Conroy said the displaced residents were all sent to a community center with the Red Cross.

Firefighters closed Sandwich Road between the Mid-Cape Connector and Adams Street as they investigated.

Investigators are still trying to determine what started the fire.
