Council rejects Gov. Patrick's judicial nominee

BOSTON (AP) - The Governor's Council rejected Gov. Deval Patrick's nominee to fill a district court judge vacancy in Worcester Wednesday.

Patrick had nominated attorney Stephen Anderson to fill the post, but the council voted 4-3 Wednesday against Anderson, citing his lack of experience as a criminal defense attorney as one reason.

It was the final council meeting chaired by outgoing Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray, who is stepping down to lead the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce.

With Murray gone, it will be up to Patrick to preside over the meetings for the rest of his term.

The Governor's Council is an elected eight-member panel charged with reviewing and approving the governor's judicial nominations.
