Construction detour begins on the Longfellow Bridge

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The Mass. Department of Transportation began a construction detour on the Longfellow Bridge Sunday.

The work has shut down the Cambridge-bound side of the bridge. Drivers will be detoured from Charles Circle to Edwin H. Land Boulevard.

One lane of the Boston-bound side will remain open during construction. Bicyclists and pedestrians will be able to use the bridge during the repairs.

More changes will come in Sept. 2014 when the Boston-bound lane will shift its position on the bridge while the Cambridge-bound detour will remain in place.

Construction is expected to last three and a half years.
