Complete stranger pays for teacher's school supplies

SAN ANTONIO — Sabrina Drude was shopping for school supplies in San Antonio, when a man standing behind her decided to lend a helping hand.

CBS News reported Drude was standing in line at Walmart with a cart filled with hundreds of notebooks, pencils and markers.

The man, who was later identified as Lester Brown, stood behind her and noticed she didn’t have any kids with her. So he asked why she needed the supplies.

Sabrina explained that she teaches seventh grade at a school located in a low socioeconomic school district. She said that some students can’t always afford what their peers can.

"I don’t want them to have to deal with that embarrassment or them not even wanting them to tell me," she told Brown.

Drude prepared to pay for the hefty load when Brown stepped in. Touched by the woman’s kind gesture, he offered to pay for everything in her cart.

"He said, 'Put your wallet away,' and I just started crying," Drude told CBS News. "That’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard."

"I remember I had this $100 bill with the intention of responding to something in need, and God said to respond," Brown told KENS5.

Drude said Brown told her her he did it "because teachers don’t get the recognition that they deserve."

Drude plans on sharing the story of Brown’s kind gesture with her students.

"This is exactly the type of person I want to influence my kids to be," Drude said. "I want him to inspire my kids just like he inspired me; if any of my kids grew up to be half the man he is I’d be very proud."
